jdhelm Champion Author Iowa Posts:12,146 Points:1,226,590 Joined:Dec 2009	Message Posted: Apr 26, 2012 11:30:59 AM Ignore jdhelm Report Abuse uh huh, went to a country German Lutheran church school thru the 8th grade and learned to speak English, then went to a town public high school 8 miles away, rode my horse usually to country school, some days to high school - until the principal called my folks and said: no more horse poop on the lawn outside my window where your son ties up his horse. Most of the low German dialects have been lost, however, the University of Iowa (several years ago, I heard) sent some language students and 1 or 2 professors, to record and interview many of the elderly people from the Amana Colony area, to try to keep a history of the languages of the 7 villages in central eastern Iowa, where the Amana Colonies are located. Very few of the folks around there talk German much, anymore. When ever I get back home home, I try to talk as much German as I can, and then I find myself talking it yet, up to 3-4 weeks later where I now live. When I was a small child, around the time of the end of WW2 and shortly after, we were told that if we went to a town other than one of the 7 villages of the Amanas, we were not to speak German. The english speakers believed that we were Nazis, and as a child, I remember getting beat up by older town kids when I spoke German in the non-German speaking towns. Many of us were threatened by non-German speaking town folks (outside the Amanas) and would get a visit from them late at night, when those town people would come and burn down a small out-building and tell us that if we came to "their" town again speaking German, the next time, our house would get burned down. Little did they know or care that my father and 5 uncles were in the Army and all helped in WW2 by listening and decoding much of the German radio broadcasts, and fighting along with all the other military. These purchases hummed and glowed and gave off heat. He had a sign over the entire vibrating mess that read: ACHTUNG! DAS MACHINE IST NICHT FUR GERFINGERPOKEN UND MITTENGRABBEN. IST EASY SCHNAPPEN DER SPRINGENWERK, BLOWENFUSEN, UND POPPENCORKEN MIT SPITZSPARKEN. IST NIGHT FUR GEWERKEN BY DAS DUMKOPFEN. DAS RUBBERNECKEN SIGHTSEEREN KEEPEN DAS HANDS IN DAS POCKETS. RELAXEN UND WATCH DAS BLINKENLIGHTS. And he had me convinced that this was German. My father, who grew up with German but never spoke it in the house, shook his head.
