More moving parts means more service and cost, not to mention more prone to breakdowns!

Diesels have a flatter torque curve, so maybe a 4 speed would be fine. They put VW diesels in Chrysler cars to export out of the US, why not sell them here? If we have to change presidents to make that happen, no problem.
We drive a Caliber with infinite speed transmission. Works pretty well. It would be nice if they'd perfect that instead of all those gears.

I remember it was a big deal for 4speed manuals and 4 speed automatics. Nine speed Wow!

It is a step in the right direction. But Chrysler still has a way to go to get back to what it was a couple of decades ago.

There is a limit to the benefits of the number of speeds in an automatic transmission. The additional cost versus the additional benefits. 8 and 9 speeds; it is approaching or has passed the limits of the law of diminishing return!!

Take a look at any April edition of Consumer's Reports in which they rate the repair history and reliability of all vehicles sold in America based upon surveys submitted by their millions of subscribers. Year after year Chrysler products (along with GM) are rated the least reliable with more problems than any other manufacturer. Japanese manufacturers along with some Ford products are always rated the highest. The idea of repairing an 8 or 9 speed transmission in a vehicle just out of warranty scares the bleep out of me! They only way I would even consider purchasing a Chrysler product is if they offered a full replacement warranty for as long as you own the vehicle.

Maybe someday, the auto industry will catch up to the bicycle industry.

9 speed trannys seem like overkill. Hope they don't have reliability issues - wouldn't want to pay the transmission shop to fix a 9 speed!

What will this do to the average Chrysler new car price? Do BMW and Audi's have mor frequent automatic transmission problems that result from the increased number of gears? Bottom line, will this be cost effective?

For some reason, this reminds me of the first days of front wheel drive for Chrysler. Omni's and Horizons with a VW 4 cylinder 1.5 and 1.6 engine.
