With the national average price of gasoline at $3.34 per gallon and rising, with many cities seeing 10-cent price hikes in the past week, it's easy to see only the negatives.

There are some positive things to keep in mind too, and Jack Gerard, CEO of the American Petoleum Institute, raised some of those points in his annual State of American Energy speech last week.

Of course, he said all the things you'd expect the spokesman for 'Big Oil' to say... He made the usual statements about America's national security interests being linked directly to its energy independence and made the oil barons sound like they were doing something noble by exporting all that oil to overseas customers eager to pay lots of money...

Putting aside the usual baloney statements about energy independence (since the USA has NEVER been able to produce anywhere near enough domestic oil to satisfy the current level of demand), let's deal with these silly statements:

"our gross domestic product of $15 TRILLION is exceeded by our debt of $15.23 TRILLION. Yes, our debt is now greater than the entire U.S. economy."

The current U.S. federal debt held by the public is only around $10 Trillion. According to the Federal Reserve's most recent Flow of Funds Accounts, the total net worth of the USA is $57.4 Trillion.

If we don't shoot ourselves in the foot...again....we may muddle through this energy crisis with flying colors.

The keystone pipeline will put people to work for a little while. While these workers are working, speculators will tout that our economy is recovering and our oil and gas prices will go up. Then, the refiners will export this oil or gasoline refined from this oil and will contribute NOTHING to our country's lackluster effort at energy independence. Big Oil will never let that happen because they are WAY TOO GREEDY!!!

That's right, energy jobs can not come fast enough for most of us wanting something better.

Buddy, my friend, nothing is going to lower the price in upcoming years, at least for a while, not even the alternatives. Plus, we're not getting better mileage, it's worse technically speaking today with some vehicles than it was say 10 and 15 years ago. However, we'll move forward with vehicles getting better fuel efficiency and we'll always have people like myself and others trying to push the limits to get better mileage from the vehicles already out there.

Drill - we are already a net exporter of finished fuels after 60 some years. It is all about profit. To think that more oil will lower the price, I would guess now is not true, even though we are using less, or getting better MPG. Alternatives are what will lower the price.

And there lies the problem. It doesn't matter how much oil and natural gas we have, it means nothing if we can't get it out of the ground.

Hey blame the president for not getting the Keystone project approved!!! Thousands would be working if he would get off his hands and have the guts to MOVE FORWARD! He's pocketing money on both sides, so he will drag this out until someone hold his feet to the fire! SHAME ON HIM!!!

He doesn't care about the people... He cares about his bank account!

The US does not have more than it's northern neighbour Canada who want to supply us but opposition is chasing them away to other countries who want to buy their energy products.

The US needs to be developing more of its own resources (including drilling more in AK and off the coasts of CA and FL) as well as investing more in generating oil from modified bacteria and/or using algae.
