Commuters in Central Florida remember well the massive pileup on I-4 back on January 9, 2008. Because of dense fog and motorists driving too fast, 70 cars and trucks crashed into each other; five people died and 38 others were injured.

At this time of year many regions of the U.S. experience dangerous fog in early morning hours which can engulf roadways rapidly, making driving extremely hazardous. What can appear to be good visibility in one stretch of road can, with one turn, quickly become thick with fog and suddenly drivers realize their speed is too great for their now severely limited visibility.

Fog is basically a cloud at ground level. It forms when the temperature drops to the dew point (the temperature at...

I do slow down a fair amount, but less than many other people. I also maintain considerable more focus every moment of my driving.

Pretty scary when you're on a highway going 65mph at night and run into a fog bank.

I'll take snow driving over fog any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Lately, it's been lke a bad horror movie around here with morning and evening fog.

I have experienced thick fog while driving first hand and there is sometimes nothing you can do but pull over if you can't see.

Blupupher reminds me -- early morning and early night driving and driving in fog brings us into contact with people who think that if they can see the road ....good enough, then they don't need to turn on their lights. That's why we need running lights on cars. They help. Even more, we need automatic headlights in semi darkness and fog so the headlights and taillights come on too.
My dear old economy minded and late dad was one who didn't like to burn his lights (unnecessarily) nor use his wipers (might wear 'em out)except in extreme cases. Utterly dark, and one swipe with the wipers at a time.

Really? There needs to be an article about this?
Maybe the next one should be turn on your headlights at night.

People in this country expect others to take responsibility for their safety, refusing to take responsibility for themselves.

When I lived in England 1965-67 I thought the English were very bland people. Now I think they handled the fog over there pretty well.

One slight correction. This accident was NOT caused by dense fog. It was caused by dense drivers who were not operating their vehicles safely enough for road conditions.

People amaze me at times. I don't need my lights on, I can see fine. It's not to SEE it's to BE SEEN! This goes for fog, rain, snow, sleet, sunup, sundown, anytime visibility is reduced. It's especially important if you have a car color that is a 'blender'; it blends with the background. Colors like gray, silver, tan, some greens, black, to name a few blend in with the background or the color of the road. A guy I knew once had a large truck painted blaze orange and neon yellow. I asked him why and he replied "If someone runs into me, they can't say they didn't see me!"

Also, people who have 4 wheel drive/all wheel drive; yes you can accelerate faster in the snow and ice, but you still stop and turn like the rest of us!

If I remember correctly, the crash on I-4 in '08 had visibility drastically reduced not only by fog but also by smoke from several forest fires at the same time. It certainly was a NASTY accident!!!!

Sometime you hit a fog area not expecting and before you can slow down, there are those ahead of you that you can't see that cause the accident, not because you still try to drive fast, however,
=============

My car can see through fog, it has a laser sensor that measure the distance of object in front of it and break itself and have a bazooka at the rear to take care what's coming behind.
