Motorists in the Northeast should be aware that a large amount of refining capacity is up for sale, and could impact local gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel prices in the future. Pending the outcome of sales, the refineries may continue operation or could be idled, resulting in much tighter supply of products, and higher prices for consumers.

According to the EIA, three refineries that compromise over 50% of the refining capacity in the Northeast are up for sale, with two of these facilities already idled. It's easy to see in our weekly EIA reports that production in the Northeast has taken a hit, with utilization rates in the 50-60 percentile, vs the national average of 80-88%.

Last fall, Sunoco decided to offer for sale...

it costs money to run and upkeep refineries, something Pig Oil doesn't want to do b/c it cuts into the profits.

Its patriotic to have refineries here in the States so not rely on other countries to do it.

Not much glamor in operating a refinery. Nasty. Stinks. Everyone hates you...especially those in the neighborhood. When investors find they can make better money (return) they go elsewhere. There isn't much profit in refining these products and sometimes I wonder why the oil companies even mess with it--especially up in the NE where the government is on your case all the time for existing. And when you consider how much more money there is in other aspects of the energy business.....like If you're solar, Obama even gives you money...other people's but spendable just the same. And we wonder why we have an energy problem.

With the huge profits Big oil and refineries are making, is this another way to gouge the driving public?
Big oil and refineries continue to ‘export’ fuel and natural gas to other countries! US natural resources that belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! Speculators, manipulators and the banks continue to unfairly and unjustly make the driving public pay higher prices at the pump.
Produce and ‘drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Economists have for ages stated "Supply and Demand". So why now; economic engines run on the need for fuel, so why are they cutting the refining. It's happening across N. America. I believe it was June 2010, Shell closed their Montreal refinery. What is the petroleum industry up to?

Profit per SHARE isn't so great for oil companies. The looney left only looks at total profit. Drug companies make billions. But if you want to look at high profit per share. Look at COSMETIC companies.

Aren't refineries just a way to print cash? Since many here seem to agree that refineries make obscene profits at our expense why would any sane person/corporation close one (let alone 3) down?

Or is it possible that they don't really make as much of a profit as we think?

These Refineries are geared for high dollar export oil, not cheap US oil... With the US finding more oil, you would think they would have switch these refineries to US oil???

Don't worry the CEOs will still make millions for closing these refineries... And the Northeast you will lose millions at the pumps...

Unlike Government, unprofitable businesses cannot stay in business. I wonder why these refineries couldn't export refined oil products to stay in business? But many people object to that as well. Why are businesses supposed to be altruistic and not make money?
