As many of you may know, the ethanol subsidy was allowed to expire December 31, as many of you were probably out celebrating the New Year with hats and toasting.

So it has been over a month with no special subsidy on ethanol, so what's happening? Well, at my local pump, ethanol is still in the gasoline, so on that level, not a whole lot. However, the price of ethanol has risen- raising the price of fuel with higher ethanol concentrations. E85, a flex fuel that's been sold hard by domestic vehicle manufacturers, has seen a large increase in price, and has one industry leading publication asking a big question- is E85 going to die?

Today we polled some of you, asking if ethanol content in your gasoline was a determining factor...

The next subsidy that needs to be addressed is big oil! Ethanol took their hit. Let's level the playing field.
Ethanol is here to stay! It will survive!

I actually saw E85 priced 40 cents less than regular unleaded at Sheetz in Pa yesterday. 3.39 vs 3.79

The biggest joke is the mandate of 14 Billion gallons of ehtanol that needs to go into the fuel. So the ethanol industry could care less... that is the "Next" subsidy that needs to be addressed.

it will continue to be a thinner as long as barrel oil price is up and production sources for ethanol is cheap ( read as non-corn based). Let Adam Smith take it out.

It needs to die if it can't be marketed at the right price.People with Flex Fuel vehicles were not using it when the price was a little lower...ask them why and you'll get your answer as to how long it will survive.

If the ethanol producers promise to take their product out of my gasoline I promise to consume the total quantity of their product in my daily cocktails.

Ethanol can't die soon enough for me, it ruins engines and gives less power.

The farmers are working hard to keep corn in the gas. I tried to buy corn free gas but can not find it in the most common brands anywhere around here. Would switch in a heartbeat if I did.

@ Bruno44: How much has your MPG increased without ethanol? With what kind of vehicle a driving patterns? And is the increased MPG saving you money despite the higher price of ethanol-free gas?

“I don't think EPA will allow gasoline without ethanol to be sold for over the road use in cars.”

Cssco, as a Virginian you should know better. Ethanol-free gasoline is readily available in western Virginia. You’re pretty well stuck with contaminated gas in the metro areas of eastern Virginia but further west there are a lot of stations selling E0, often proclaiming it with prominent signs. I have not bought any ethanol-laced gasoline for over 3 years.

The rising cost of ethanol is a short-term hardship but a long-term blessing. It will serve to make E0 even more competitive on price. Watch for stations with E0 when you are out of the urban areas and buy it as often as you can. Your engine and your wallet will both benefit. Increasing demand for and consumption of E0 is the best way to increase its availability at more stations and in more areas. And lobby Congress and your Legislature to repeal the mandates for ethanol use.

With the conditions of today, low market, lack of employment, and high prices, ethanol is not worth it. The right idea is to get ride of it in gasoline!!

“I wish the notion that ethanol added to gas saves gas would be proved.”

Whose notion is that? Exactly the opposite is true. Using the standard E10 that is sold in most areas increases overall petroleum consumption compared to using pure gasoline.

I don't think EPA will allow gasoline without ethanol to be sold for over the road use in cars. Maybe on the high seas beyond the fifty mile coastal zone.

Ethanol from corn should never have been subsidized or created for anything other than moonshine as it was originally used. It is destroying food for people whether it is folks who live on corn tortillas or corn bread and other uses for the stuff. The corrupt lobbyist and corruptible legislators with a particular agenda make this type of cronyism possible.

It would be interesting to see if 100% gasoline is purchased over the current gasoline with 10% ethanol. I for one would like to have the choice. Let the market decide.
