Just last month GasBuddy reported Virginia's interest in creating a new Toll Road Authority that would construct, operate and maintain toll roads statewide. And this new bureaucracy would assume control of the state's Dept. of Transportation.

The state house favors a plan already approved by Governor Bob McConnell to sell the naming rights to roads and bridges and on top of all that representatives say they've got to increase the Virginia gas tax to ensure more money for transportation.

Sound familiar? It should... That's what we're hearing from Iowa, Maryland, Michigan and other states too.

The Virginia state Senate is proposing that the gas tax be annually adjusted and indexed to inflation on highway...

No! That is only true if the progressives ate in power. The Al Gores of this world love these high prices and will not let them go down if they can help it.

At present gas taxes are the best way to pay for highways and bridges. The lightest vehicles do the least damage to the roads and get the best mileage so they pay the least in taxes. Those who drive the fewest miles also pay low taxes. It is a good system until there gets to be a significant number of EVs that are not buying any liquid fuels, hence not paying for their use of the roads. The gas tax has to be indexed to inflation in order to pay the costs of upkeep. Just the facts of life folks.

==================================================================
You are correct. It WAS Bush senior who asked US to read his lips. If he did, in fact, mean "KNOW new taxes" then he was true to his word. I suppose we will need to be more careful to not assume that a President means one thing when it might be something entirely different.

More gas would be sold if the price was low(er) and thus more taxes would be collected, making an increase totally unnecessary.

With better MPG we are all going to have to pay more to support the roads and bridges, but we want an accounting that all the money state and federal is going only for roads and bridges.

I don't think gas tax is a percentage, but so many cents/gallon.. so it hasn't been going up with inflation.. then throw in the hybrids, EVs and people driving less.. I'm afraid it'll be going up one way or another soon

Bullcrap to the "should be adjusted annually"...
Fact of the matter is, it *IS* already being adjusted annually relative to inflation...
Meaning, as gas prices increase (because of "inflation"), the tax revenue and even at the same percentage is increasing:

Tax percentage = A (constant)
Gasoline sales (in gallons) = B (constant)
Price per Gallon = C (increasing due to inflation)

Therefore A X B X C = Z (increasing due to inflation)

But it won't be the first time government is double taxing my ass... The tax me to earn it and they tax me when IO spend it...

I think its time to buy that island and declare independence!

If they are taxing gas at a percent of the price of gas, whenever the gas prices go up they are getting more tax revenue.
