I have had a Matrix for about a year, and so far has preformed well. I found it comfortable to drive on long trips and is more fuel efficient than my mini van was.(Not to mention cooler to drive). If you live where it snows I would advise getting snow tires as the lower profile all seasons that come with it are not good in the snow.

I drive the Matrix sometimes and it is a great car for a family with lots of leg and cargo room (not much in the back, but a lot with the folded 2 back seats). Great on gas. The 2009 Matrix looks more aggressive and sporty feel. The resell value is probably good on it since it is a Toyota. You will get your money's worth in the long run.

We own both the Toyota Matrix and the GM Pontiac Vibe (Toyota made chassis & powerplant) for my wife. The Vibe is more like station wagon with conservative styling, cargo rack and a neat Pontiac frontend. The Vive offers a better stereo, but that didn't matter for me because I went with a aftermarket Alpine stero that is cheaper and much better than the OEM CD. The Matrix has the low spoilers, a verticle raised seat with the SUV feel and a reduced rear roof line though the cargo area's are the same in diminsions. Both cars offer the same Corolla 1.8L engine and a simular interior and dash. I took the Matrix fully loaded across the Rocky Mountains fully loaded this summer and went thru several 11,000ft high highways passing most cars on the way up/down (37MPG). The car has plenty of hop for us and rides quiet and smooth. I love my Matrix because of the sleek body and styling, and the moonroof. She likes the Vive because of the choice in colors (orange), the Moon and tunes package w/rally wheels and the cargo rack. Both cars get 36-30MPG on the highway/city and are worth every penny compared to the previous SUV's. The hatch backarea is plenty for most of my Homedepot hauls with about 8" clearance from the closed hatch to the dash for long items.

The Matrix is made at the plant in Canada, where the Lexus RX330 is made along with the Corolla. A new plant will build the RAV4 there.
The Pontiac Vibe is made at the California plant that is a joint effort between GM and Toyota, where the Corolla, and Tacoma pickup are made.
Both are based on the Toyota Corolla and are very good cars. I've driven the Matrix with a 6 speed and it was a lot of fun; plenty of power and easy handling.

My wife owns a VIBE and a friend owns a Martix. Same vehicle out of the same plant. However there are differences in trim levels etc. It is still a Toyota. We have had very good luck with it. Milage is around 28 in town and we have gotten 37 on hiway (unless you drive like me at 80 and then get 32 hiway)

one of my very close fraternity brothers owns one. i've serviced a bunch of them! they are an awful lot like a RAV4 in space. the Matrix is a bit closer to the ground, though.
