OK, I want to ask before I go to the shop, the Kia shop here has consistantly tried to charge me for things I did not ask to be done.

My heater is not working- the heater coil does not seem to be out, there is air blowing through the vents, but it's cold air. This is especially annoying since our temps will be down in the 20's tomorrow and it's virtually impossible to defrost a window when the air blowing on the windshield is 20 degrees!
would like some pointer before I take it to the shop and they try to charge me for a new heater coil, blower, etc.
I just remember the last time I had a car that the heater coil had burned out on, it smoked and was veerryy obvious..
any help would be appreciated
thanks
Carole

I would concur with kia523, it's probably just not getting the warm air from the heater core into the vents.

This info is probably too late for the op, but if anyone else has the same problem... If it's blowing the blower motor is fine and if it blows on all 4 speeds the resistor is fine. If you're coolant stays full, it is unlikely that the heater core is the problem. If you aren't having any engine symptoms, it's most likely not an engine problem. If you have AC, but no heat (if you don't have AC, substitute fresh air for AC), it sounds like your blend door is stuck, which can be a problem in the control unit (where your knob is) or with the blend door motor (behind the dash). I don't know what kind of car you have, so I don't know if it is electronic or vacuum controlled.

Since even long established dealerships (worst was Chrysler) I've had issues with, doesn't surprise me about Kia's for service. My advice, if not a major item and doesn't affect warranty...stay away from dealers.

Hey thanks for the suggestion! Checked the thermostat, it's fine. Had the transmission flushed about 4 months ago, but you never know, I'll get them to check again- now I've heard that it could be as simple as a relay switch or maybe the blower- I live in Tallahassee, so it never really gets below 30- our coldest month is Feb- it might get into the 20's. but if nothing else works, I'll definitely try the cardboard thing- It still get great gas mileage, which is one of the main reasons I bought the car. But you can definitely tell it's not a luxury car! :) What do you think about the cheap dashboard heaters? Not to heat the car, just to help defrost the windshield- I know it has it's little fuse, but I'm worried about it killing my cigarette lighter, which I also use for my cell phone....

Sorry to hear you have had a problem with your KIA dealer. I never allow anything to be done, added, corrected without calling me first. In fact, I don't evven take my KIA in for regular oil changes as it would cost upwwards of $65. I can have the complete oil change, 5 quarts of oil & tires rotated at Meinke for $19.95. And it's done in 20 min instead of an all day affair ar the dealer.

The open thermostat is the cheapest and best solution, but after checking and toping off coolent levels, keep and eye on them, if the level goes down it may be an indication of a problem with the engine (head gasket or heads them selves), but you would usually see the copious white smoke at the tailpipe

I have a 1996 Kia Sportage. I have problems with heating, Gas consumption, missing, transmission (cold shifting). I have had it in and out of transmission shops. I finally cut cardboard to cover radiator and now it heats better and has helped a little with the tranny. I love my Kia but it isn't a cold weather auto. Although this method doesn't help with gas mileage.

Is it posible the system is air bound? It might be worth the trouble to take it to a local shop and have the system flushed.

Do you have enough water & antifreeze in the radiator?

First thing & cheapest thing to check is your thermostat. It might not be opening and letting the hot water flow through it.
