Both the base Mini and the Mini Cooper S are designed to run on high octane gas. If you put regular gas in either one, expect lowered performance and fuel mileage. The lowered performance and mileage will probably negate any savings at the pump.

I was told at least mid grade with the S model. I suspect you can get by with the base model with regular.

If you have the Cooper S then this is turbo-charged, hence strongly recommend not to use regular...given the extra stress & compression changes on the engine. Also, from what have heard/read, the newer engine (believe from 2006/2007) does not take regular well either. This makes sense since compression ratio was upped from 10.6:1 to 11:1 (with more power & better mpg). Mine being a 2004 is very close to other cars taking regular (many cars with 10.5:1 take regular) & in limited trials has not shown much ill effects other than some performance decrease.
As for comment of $3 /tank diff., is it really that cheap in your area??? Here its 13-16 cents/L diff. (that's $.68/gal Cdn). Do you normally pick up only 4 gals at a time?? The spread is only getting worse & its more like $10 /tank diff.
Will let you know more when have tried regular more...but may not be over the winter months as plan to use prem. or mix.

Although the owner's manual recommends premium fuel rated at 91 octane or higher, the MINI will run on regular. There is a noticeable loss in performance and mileage and to me it's just not worth the poor performance to save about $3 on a tank of gas. I have a 2006 Cooper S with the auto and love it!
