It is more of a budget killer than anything. Plus without summer school, not regular school, a child cannot graduate early from high school without those summer courses to push them ahead the following year.

I'm not in a year round school district, but I would like to see the long summer vacation bitten into a bit. I would rather see students go nine weeks or so, then have a two week break. The tedium, even when instruction is good, that sets in over the course of two semesters is sometimes mind-numbing. I'd like to see a school year that would allow more flexibility

Nevada has the year-round-school format. Have had for several years. Swing by their websites and read their comments ...

That would stink for parents, students, and teachers alike.

Going year round has not helped to improve education. So why have it?

Wow, I cannot believe that people actually think year-round school is a good thing. If this ever becomes mandatory in North Dakota, you will have a LOT of upset parents especially since this is an agriculture state. Also, the kids would have nothing to do over their winter break when it is extremely cold and storming here. At least with summer break, they can get out and have some fun. Our communities are too small in this state to have year-round school.
I also agree with a previous post. Let our kids be kids. It is bad enough all the information that they pump into these kids during school. They are only kids once. Let them be kids.
Some parents need to remember back to when they were kids. How would you have felt back when you were kids if you had to go to school year round with only small breaks throughout the year instead of a big summer break. I know I would have HATED it.

We homeschool and we do it year round. Heat of Summer & freezing cold winter are the best time for school in our house. Spring and early fall we take a family vacation or enjoy the great outdoors.

Been here, done that. The only drawback is that there is no chance for students to "grow up" over Summer break. I taught in a year round district, 8th grade. Graduated my 8th graders to high school and two weeks later had another crop of 8th graders with a 7th grade mentality. Took a couple weeks to get them "grown up" into the 8th grade. My district is no longer year round due to budget cutbacks. California, you know.

I see year-round schooling as being positive. How many children have both parents working and spend the day watch T.V or anything else they choose to do. Children are bored and schools are empty.

our school district is on more-or-less September to June - but over 50% of the students do some Summer class - so that's another 6 to 8 weeks.

there is no empirical evidence to show that marks go up because of year round schooling. It is just anecdotal. Childhood doesn't last very long, and we should encojurage our children to be children and enjoy their youth, instead of living the adult grind that many of us go through later in life.

I say yes to year round schools! I think the kids would retain more if the breaks weren't so long. Continuous Learning!

I wish I had a year-round school in my town. Living in the US, you really don't see to many. I'm in my senior year, but every break from school I get frustrated because I can't remember what I learned prior to having time off. Year-round schooling would keep us kids constantly learning and refreshing our minds with what we already know, which in turn would lead to more people graduating high school and attending college. What's not to like?

Should be mandatory in all jurisdictions. What a waste of all those buildings just sitting there unused.

My understanding of year round schooling may be different than some people's. The number of holidays remains the same; they are simply distributed differently. Shorter summers, longer Christmas holidays. It's usually something like a two week break every six or eight weeks. There are of course various plans. The advantage for students is less of the loss of skills over the shorter holiday periods. Usually it's parents who object since they want to be able to take their families away for extended periods, such as summer allows.

Don't teach at a year round school (teach at traditional school) but my kids go to one.
I think its great. I believe my kids are doing better academically than they would at a traditional school. They remember more and build on what they learn better. The shorter breaks are definately a plus.
Actually, have asked that the school I teach at move to that schedule. I believe our scores would go up.
