The quality of gas doesn't change from station to station

KTVL News -- MEDFORD, Ore. -- Even though the price of gas varies from station to station, there is not major difference in quality.

AAA Auto Club says all gas is required to meet certain federal, state industry and environmental standards. Gas stations in the same geographical area buy its gas from the same factory. Gas in Southern Oregon is shipped from Northern California.

Regional Manager Becky Lonctot with AAA says there can be a slight difference in gas -- if a station adds engine cleaning additives to its standard recipe.

However, Lonctot says the difference isn't likely not big enough to damage a car.

"A lot of the time for pricing, we like to compare it to a grocery store," Lonctot said. "One grocery store might charge X amount for a loaf of bread and another might charge a little bit less

It is all the same except for the additives. That is why I buy the cheapest gas I can find and throw in a bottle of Walmart gas treatment every couple of tanks.

ok, but what about these stations/pumps that don't pump just fuel, but add air...well, ok...gauge the pumping of fuel so that you are not getting what you think you are getting...it has been covered on the local news here, am sure it is happening elsewhere...didn't get how we are suppose to know if we are being cheated or how to know...(shrug)

Of course AAA office managers and travel agent supervisors are "experts" on all aspects of gasoline and its quality.

We all know that gas in an area comes from the same "factory". About the only fuel that gets tested on a daily basis to assure it meets "certain federal, state industry and environmental standards" is that for Air Force One.

What a great and informative article.

The majors have their "unique" additives, but the retailers have nothing to do with additives.

all stations put additives in gasoline, it's the law. they are mostly for temperature compensation. ethanol is another story, it will actually boost octane if mixed properly and your engine is built to run on it, but otherwise you screwed.

“stay away from the additives, hope they dump ethanol”

Ethanol is not an additive in the sense of this article. All stations in an area buy from the same refinery and then add detergents and other things to maintain a clean engine. These additives are important and they do vary among brands. As for ethanol, buy gas without it if it is available to you, even at a higher price.

Additives generally lower mileage after reaching the amounts really needed.

Additives still make a difference in the internal parts of your engine.

The cheapest gas usually has no additives. Whereas the more expensive brands have their patented special additives to clean the engine and burn cleaner, so they say.

All stations in a region draw from the same rack - same raw material that is.

What makes it brand specific are the additives. You judge whether the cost justifies the differences between brands.

I don't think it makes much difference at all

Only real difference is the additives. And if you see the truck refilling drive on by. It's stirring up the junk in the tanks

I worry more about the reputation of the station than the brand. The gas might be the same, but some stations have old and rusty tanks.

Not a surprise since most of the gas is delivered from the same few distributors.
