The quality of gas doesn't change from station to station

KTVL News -- MEDFORD, Ore. -- Even though the price of gas varies from station to station, there is not major difference in quality.

AAA Auto Club says all gas is required to meet certain federal, state industry and environmental standards. Gas stations in the same geographical area buy its gas from the same factory. Gas in Southern Oregon is shipped from Northern California.

Regional Manager Becky Lonctot with AAA says there can be a slight difference in gas -- if a station adds engine cleaning additives to its standard recipe.

However, Lonctot says the difference isn't likely not big enough to damage a car.

"A lot of the time for pricing, we like to compare it to a grocery store," Lonctot said. "One grocery store might charge X amount for a loaf of bread and another might charge a little bit less

The brands have different additives and detergents. Regardless of the additives, there are standards that each grade must meet. Some brands my exceed the minimum standards by a greater margin than others.

just like fresh bread and veggies, gas has a shelf life and can go bad. your engine will tell you if you listen to it. look for the station that does a lot of gas pumping as it will be fresher.

There seems to be a difference in the amount of cleaning agents added to gasoline. Visit toptiergas.com. Some manufacturers, like Audi, recommend top tier gas in their vehicles, therefore it must be better quality. The octane number is the same across the board, that has already been established.

For at least the last twenty years I've never found a noticeable difference. That was until I finally found 87 octane non-ethanol on my last fill-up. Now my car feels spunky again. Big difference if you get off ethanol.

For the most part this is correct. In the old days there were off-brands that left a margin for error. Now almost all stations are branded and get their gas from the same place, blending proprietary additives at delivery to the station.

Boy, that is only part of the story...don't forget with almost NO ties between the name on the gas pump and the source of the refined gas...THERE really can be the same source for all manner of competitors at the distribution level!

You have always been able to tell if Medford gas comes from California or Oregon/Washington. In many areas gas comes from the same source no matter the brand and in other areas it may shipped in from different areas. Additives do change from station to station but basic gas is highly regulated.
