Government Fuel Conservation

Yahoo -- What a terrible mess we're in. Gasoline is averaging four dollars a gal. The price increases week after week, and there's no end in sight. Worse, we are at the mercy of the world's most unstable region, a group of countries that just happen to despise us. And to top it all off, we are guaranteed to run out of oil within the next fifty years, twenty if China and India continue to increase consumption at current rates.
As the noose continues to tighten, the typical conservation pleas abound - calls for carpooling, mass transit, walking and biking wherever possible. Good ideas, all, but a mere drop in the ocean of fuel conservation that is needed. As it turns out, tremendous amounts of gasoline could be saved, with a resulting drop in prices, if our federal, state, and local governments

Agree with wamster. Many of the author's "brilliant ideas" are far from brilliant. Cutting back on days of postal delivery is coming very soon. Putting postal carriers in very expensive hybrid delivery vehicles makes little sense, not very cost effective.

Locally, many trash trucks, buses & delivery vehicles (UPS, etc) run on CNG. More CNG powered urban delivery vehicles makes sense. Getting rid of street sweepers, can't see that. Eliminating residential trash pick-up in favor of "community drop off approach", not happening.

How about using hybrid or full EV for buses and garbage trucks. Hybrids greatly improve fuel efficiency of this sort of stop-and-go traffic.

I don't agree with some points of the article. I think the government needs to stop wasting money in other areas.

1. If the highway grass gets two or more feet in height and it catches fire, I think it could pose a problem.

2.Anyone who has ever lived in a cul de sac depends on the street sweeper. It isn't just trash and cigarette butts which can be manually picked up. Dirt and mud pile up and it needs the power sweeper. A manual broom won't do the job.

3. I'm agreeable to no mail delivery on Saturday, but don't like the idea of three days a week delivery.

I've been hearing "we will run out of oil in the next 20 years" for forty years, yet proven reserves keep growing. Maybe we'll never run out of oil.

No doubt, government could do a better job of managing taxpayer dollars and there are some feasible ideas here to work with.
Regarding highway mowing, I think this is mandatory for the overall traffic safety of motorists. Be it urban or rural if the grass is allowed to grow and the weather is dry the potential for out of control grass/brush fires is increased which can cause hazard and disruption of traffic flow.
Not to mention, we may save on the mowing but now we have to spend the money on firefighting.

While all of these ideas may seem simple, their implementation would be hugely difficult and complicated. Our government, unlike others around the world, has to abide by the will of the people, and there would be a lot of protest from the people about most of those ideas.

Some of his suggestions are totally nuts.

Cut school down to 3 days. Our kids are not learning with 5 days. What would they do in three?

His garbage idea is the pits. Many of us could not deliver garbage to a given site for a number of reasons. One example....disabled.

The writer is out of his gourd.

The problem is the U.S. ISN'T the leading consumer. Our conservation efforts, while laudable, are ineffective.
