Nevada Appeal -- Cycling and cyclists have always been a fringe or counter-culture. The sport, perhaps like soccer, is viewed by many here as a healthful activity for children, or to be viewed at arm's length. Nobody in the mainstream seems to decry the value of cycling. It's a good cardiovascular activity. It's a great thing to do on the weekends with a spare hour or four. It's wonderful to watch a child wobble their way to freedom for the first time on a two-wheeler.

	Now that the Spring rains have ended here in Oregon, I've been biking to work. Did it last summer also and I'm on the high side of 50! What's your lame excuse.

	I am down for biking to the Caltrain station and then from the Caltrain station to my job, but anything over a 5 to 10 minute ride forget it!

	rod1965 said, "Only an idiot would bike more than ten miles to work." Hmmm...I've been an idiot for over 10years! rod, Portland has been called the most bike-friendly city in the US. Why wouldn't you bike to work? For the rest who say it is not an option where they live, I'm sure most simply aren't aware of the trails (on & off-road) that exist. Minneapolis has an extremely extensive trail network, but the majority of people aren't even aware of it!

	I just rode 109 miles on Saturday - from Columbus, Ohio to Portsmouth, Ohio in the TOSRV (Tour of the Scioto River Valley) Bike Tour. Oh, and I rode back another 109 miles on Sunday... with 4,000 other cyclists. For the record, I'm in my forties, weigh in at 240 pounds, and I'm in decent shape. Most of the riders are even older than me! No excuses now... ANYONE can ride for distance. There is also the bus option that others have mentioned. Ride the bus part way, rack the bike while you ride, and continue to work. Save money on gas, save money on a gym membership (you won't need one), and get healthier all at the same time! 	This site is all about saving money... Right? OK, so if I bike to work, I'm not only saving money on gas, but I'm also saving money by not needing a gym membership for my daily workout! What? You don't have time to ride? It'll take too long? Well, eliminate that one hour plus at the gym from your day, and you've got it! What's that? You don't belong to a gym? That's OK - You know you need the exercise, and now you've found an activity that'll save you money TWICE!

	You can also bike to the nearest bus terminal and they will put you bike on the rack on the bus. When you reach the nearest bus stop to the job, you can bike the rest of the way. That should cover the most of those who don't think they could use a powered bike to work. As to the rest, move closer to work or find a job closer to home.

	More benefits are needed for cyclists...have companies put in showers, secure bike lock-ups, change areas, etc. How about a tax break for biking to work? How about more bike paths and bike lanes? Just think of how much gas would be saved if everyone biked just one day to work...then think how much two days would be...the surplus in gas would bring the price down.

	If you tried it on my commute, you would not make it. there is no place on a two lane road for a biker to use unless he uses the whole lane. People traveling at 50mph would not like that very much.

	I read an article in the Denver Post this am about scooters, 85mpg. It might work for some,,,,food for thought.

	So I'm one of the few very lucky ones that lives close to work and near a bike trail. But I wish most buildings had showers and indoor bike lockups. You would think that urban areas would accommodate that better, if only to encourage more free spots in the parking lot. To all the bicyclists reading this, please obey the rules of the road. Remember other bicyclists will have to deal with the loony toon you just pissed off driving a 5000lb Expedition.

	Boston is putting in bike lanes starting this summer - great for people that work in Boston - lots of us do not. Unfortunatly I cannot bike to my place of work - too far and all major highways - only option - switch jobs, which at my age is not a plesant thought.

	mplato; Look at Holland with all the special bicycle roads. They are the same as auto roads with lights at intersections. The only unsafe time in Amsterdam is when a factory shift ends and the employees roar out of the plants on their bikes. In Copenhagen Denmark there are huge bike parking facilities at rail stations where there more bicycles parked than you could count in an hour several stories high.. I saw a street with the bikelane was being plowed up, so the next car lane had to be cordoned off for the use of the king/queen of the road, the bicycles. In Germany we were biking down the Rhein to find that the bike road had fallen into the river. The authorities therefore took one of the two auto lanes gave to the bicycles forcing the cars to use the other with street lights at each end to control the single lane.
